When did you begin CrossFit at Carousel?
The first week of May 2014
Why did you choose CrossFit vs the typical gym?
The typical gym has never been an interest to me, I admire the people that have the self-discipline to go in and workout on their own. Participating in a scheduled class has been best for me to keep me on a regular routine. I heard how CrossFit really builds on strength and endurance and that is exactly what I was looking for in a workout And I do love that Carousel CrossFit also provides access to the regular gym. I used to try to maintain a somewhat regular schedule of running a few miles and going to yoga classes, but wasn’t seeing much improvement even after a few years and I needed a “game-changer”.
What is the biggest thing you have accomplished since beginning? (Strength/Weight Loss/Body Composition)
My biggest accomplishment is just being able to perform certain movements I never imagined I could or would ever do. I still can’t believe I am even touching a barbell, let alone lifting over 100lbs over my head! But also, the strength I’ve developed and improvement in my lung capacity has been significant, I do have a mild form of asthma. Being able to work through some breathing difficulties knowing my breathing will get better over time has been lesson I did not foresee learning.
What do you hope to achieve moving forward?
My primary goal is just to maintain an overall healthy lifestyle. A major focus for me this year will be to improve my breathing. Over the last number of months, I’ve discovered my strengths along with some weaknesses. So, I hope to further improve my current weakness especially, burpees & pull ups with the plan to turn them into my new favs.
Would I recommend Carousel CrossFit?
Absolutely! First, the “coaches” are great. They’re highly skilled, terribly kind and can offer that one-on-one attention. From what I gather, the equipment is top notch & there’s plenty to go around. The facility is unlike other CrossFit programs out there, the size alone couldn’t be better. I love it that 20+ people can participate in the workout indoors with an expansive space for us to run outdoors too. I was intimidated at first, I know Transcend Fitness/Carousel CrossFit attract some of the top athletes in the area, but there are crossfitters with abilities on every level. Everyone who participates, even the strongest/fastest athletes, have done nothing but encourage me & push me to do my best and have become wonderful friends over the year. What other CrossFit facility has a fun team workout with like 50 people and celebrates with a BBQ and bonfire? I feel as if I lucked out.
What would you say to those thinking about starting CrossFit?
Half the battle is to keep showing up, the other half is just doing your best. I’m in my 30s and the last time I was this active was when I played sports in my teens…if I can do it, so can anyone else.
